OPS Recruitment and Hiring Process

OPS positions are at-will temporary positions and do not come with benefits. Recruitment and Staffing is available to assist departments with the OPS recruitment and hiring processes. While the university currently does not have a time limit on the length of time an employee can be OPS, OPS employment should not be a substitute for a long-standing employment need.

Posting an OPS Position

Departments may choose to post OPS vacancies via GatorJobs, but are not required to do so. To post an OPS position, please follow the steps listed in the Posting General OPS and Student Jobs with GatorJobs instruction guide.

The requisition will be reviewed by an Recruitment and Staffing staff member and then authorized to appear on the web. The position may be posted for any period of time--no minimum or maximum advertising timeframe exists. However, a hiring decision may not be made prior to the application deadline date to ensure that all applicants who saw the position advertised are given a fair opportunity to apply and be considered for the vacancy.

Hiring

When a department is ready to hire an employee who applied via GatorJobs, it should follow the steps listed in the Hiring at UF instruction guide. Departments who did not post the OPS position and recruit through GatorJobs should follow the hire steps listed in the Hiring at UF instruction guide.

Minimum Requirements and Salary

Unlike TEAMS and USPS positions, there are no established minimum education and experience requirements or salary ranges for OPS positions. Rather, departments should determine the education and experience needed for the specific position as well as the salary it can pay.

If the department chooses to advertise the position, an expected starting salary range should be listed, and the salary of the employee hired into the position should match the advertised salary.

Application Review

Departments who posted the position via GatorJobs will receive applications directly. Recruitment and Staffing does not receive OPS applicants nor is any screening done prior to OPS applications going to departments. Departments should review all applications that are received for the vacancy.

If the department did not post the position via GatorJobs all applicants interviewed should be asked to complete the OPS Application for Employment. This document is a required part of the hire paperwork.

Departments should carefully review the information listed on the application to ensure it is a complete representation of the applicant's work and education background. All gaps in employment should be accounted for and dates of employment and reasons for termination listed. Any disclosures of criminal background convictions or terminations must be approved through Recruitment and Staffing prior to offering the position to the applicant. If disclosures are not approved prior to entering the hire into PeopleSoft and submitting the hire paperwork, appointments will not be made active until staff in Recruitment and Staffing review the information.
