The Dos and Dont’s of Workspace Layouts

In association with UF Health Hospital Epidemiologist Dr. Nicole Iovine.
Employees may work in a range of cubicle and workstation configurations; however, when determining when facemasks are required, consider the following:
- Do have barriers between cubicles that are at least 5.5 feet high from the floor.
- Do have desks in adjacent cubicles that do not face each other.
- Do reduce the number of people in a room to allow empty desks/6 feet between desks as possible.
If all three above statements are met, the person sitting at the desk would not need to wear a mask. However, they would need to put a mask on if they stand up or walk around.
If the above statements cannot be met, then it would be very important that the person(s) sitting at the desk(s) wear a mask.
Photo examples of acceptable cubicles/workspaces
- Tall barriers and shelf mitigate traveling of aerosols.
- Tall barriers, at least 6 feet between desks, and desks face away from each other.
- Tall barriers and 6 feet between desks.
- Tall barriers and 6 feet between desks that face away from each other.
- Tall barriers and 6 feet between desks that face away from each other.
- Tall barriers acceptable for one person.
Examples of cubicle “Don’ts”
- Don’t place desk and person closer than 6 feet apart
- Don’t place persons facing towards each other
- Don’t have a divider that is too short between desks
- Don’t have an open desk layout without dividers
Please Note: As you contemplate additional partitions to existing cubicles, keep partition tops at minimum 18 to 24 inches below the ceiling to allow for appropriate air system circulation. For information on cubicle work spacing assistance please contact Planning, Design and Construction (PDC)
Photo examples of cubicle/workspace to avoid
- Desks facing one another, large gap between cubicle walls, overall high density.
- Barrier between cubicles too short.
- Desks facing one another, short barrier height, seating too close.
- Common area would require a mask, no mask required while sitting at desk.
- Remove extra chairs to promote distancing.
- Only one person in this size space.
- Only one person on the right to keep 6 feet distance.
- Ensure desks are 6 feet apart.
- Only one person in this space to ensure distance of 6 feet between people.
- Only one person in this space to ensure distance of 6 feet between people unless a barrier is added.
- Only one person in this space to ensure distance of 6 feet between people unless a barrier is added.
- Ensure 6 feet of distance between desks as space is very open.
- These desks are too close to each other and requires barriers or masks should be required at all times.
