TN Status for Canadian and Mexican Professional Workers

  • Employee Relations
  • UF sponsors qualifying citizens of Canada and Mexico for temporary employment appointments to positions that meet the requirements established by the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

NAFTA, the North American Free Trade Agreement, creates special economic and trade relationships between the United States, Canada and Mexico. The nonimmigrant NAFTA Professional (TN) visa allows citizens of Canada and Mexico, as NAFTA professionals, to work in the United States. Permanent residents, including Canadian permanent residents, are not able to apply to work as a NAFTA professional.

NAFTA allows for the expedited admission of workers in certain professions, such as post secondary teacher positions with titles such as, assistant professors, associate professors, and professors. Other academic positions and TEAMS positions, which have corresponding duties to those identified in the trade agreement are also eligible.

To determine if a university position meets the requirements for TN sponsorship, review the NAFTA Professional Job Series List.
