  • The University of Florida (UF) is seeking a talented and experienced leader to serve as the vice president for agriculture and natural resources at UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS).  The vice president serves as the senior officer for the three main units of UF/IFAS– College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS), Research, and Extension–and provides shared leadership for the UF College of Veterinary Medicine. The vice president serves as a member of the President’s Cabinet and reports to the president of the University of Florida.

    As one of the largest and most comprehensive agriculture and natural resource enterprises in the nation, UF/IFAS requires an experienced and visionary leader who possesses a proven academic record, a commitment to excellence, and demonstrated distinction of leadership in the context of the land-grant mission.

    Given the complexity of UF/IFAS, success in this role requires a dynamic candidate who can navigate and appreciate the three distinct land-grant missions of teaching, research and Extension. This role requires an ability to collaborate, build and strengthen successful internal and external partnerships among the diverse population of the UF community as well as the broader public. The vice president establishes the strategic vision and leads over 1,000 UF/IFAS faculty in pursuit of its mission.

This position requires a bold vision of the future role of research, teaching, and Extension for agriculture and natural resources, as well as the entire institution. Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential, as is the ability to be collaborative, impartial, and able to distill complex issues and make sound judgments and recommendations on sensitive and sometimes confidential matters.  In addition, candidates should possess the following:

    • Strategic thinking with the capability of contributing at the senior administrative level and leading other leaders

    Communication and Collaboration

    • Superior oral and written communication skills and the ability to connect with a variety of audiences; and the experience, ability, and inclination to be an effective, outgoing spokesperson for UF/IFAS and the university
    • Ability and commitment to effectively work in partnerships with other senior leaders, for example with the Senior Vice President and Provost in joint oversight of the faculty and academic programs, with the Vice President of Research in joint oversight of research, with the Vice President for Government and Community Relations in state and federal relations, and with the Senior Vice President for Health Affairs in joint oversight of the College of Veterinary Medicine
    • Ability to foster collaborative activities locally, nationally and internationally
    • Ability to maintain effective liaisons with alumni, state and national professional organizations, and other stakeholders
    • Successful experience or demonstrated potential in fundraising, development activities, and collaboration with industry
    • Demonstrated ability to work with a wide variety of constituents and stakeholders to grow support for teaching, research, and/or Extension programming at the local, state and federal level

    Experience, Knowledge, and Education

    • Ph.D. or equivalent and a distinguished record of visionary leadership, research/scholarly accomplishments and excellence in academic administration
    • Demonstrated commitment to high impact research
    • Demonstrated effectiveness in planning, administration, personnel, and fiscal management
    • Successful experience or demonstrated potential in fundraising, development activities, and collaboration with industry and government
    • Demonstrated ability to lead UF/IFAS to achieve greater excellence and national impact in teaching, research, and Extension
    • Record of accomplishment in recruitment and retention of outstanding faculty, including women and those traditionally underrepresented in faculty, staff, and student bodies
    • Record of building, leading, mentoring, and motivating staff; and the ability to encourage change and growth in both people and programs

    Compensation

    Salary is competitive and commensurate with education and experience. The University of Florida offers a generous benefits package that includes health, life, and dental insurance as well as vacation, sick leave and personal days.
