The state pays for basic term life insurance for full-time employees. Part-time employees are eligible but will pay a partial premium based on their full-time equivalency (FTE). The state also offers supplementary optional term life insurance to both full-time and part-time employees.
Starting January 1, 2026, UFSelect term life insurance will be the only plan providing an Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) benefit. State term life insurance will not.
UFSelect term life insurance benefits are available to permanent employees who work 20 hours per week or more (.50 FTE).
Upon separation from employment, UFSelect term life insurance may be ported to individual term life coverage at the same rates paid as an employee. It may also be converted to a whole life policy.
State term life insurance may also be ported to individual term life or converted to a whole life policy at separation from employment. Contact MetLife at (844) 222-9104 for rates.
For retirees, the basic employer-paid term life insurance may be converted to individual retiree coverage, which is offered at a flat rate. You may choose either $2,500 or $10,000 of coverage by contacting the People First Service Center at (866) 663-4735.
